How to tell if a used car was repainted before buying

Check color and gloss differences
Stand at the side and look at the panels under sunlight. If a panel's gloss or shade differs slightly from its neighbors, it was likely repainted.
Measure paint thickness
A paint-thickness gauge shows extra filler or paint layers in a spot — a sign of past bodywork. Any professional center has one.
Look for filler and dent marks
Check inside doors, panel edges and under the hood. Filler traces, uneven paint or disturbed bolts mean the car was repaired.
Get a neutral opinion
